Understanding Australian Pay, Tax and Super
Low Income Tax Offset (LITO)
LITO is worth up to $700. It is a non-refundable offset, so it reduces the tax you owe rather than adding to your pay. It reduces by 5c for every dollar earned above $37,500, leaving $325 at $45,000, then by 1.5c per dollar until it reaches zero at $66,667.
Medicare Levy
The levy is 2% of taxable income and funds Medicare. Low-income earners pay nothing up to $27,222. Between $27,222 and $34,027 the levy is 10% of income above the floor, and above that the full 2% applies. Family and dependant thresholds are higher and are not applied here.
Superannuation Guarantee
From 1 July 2025 your employer must contribute 12% of your gross salary into super on top of your pay. At $95,000 that is $11,400 per year. Salary sacrifice does not reduce the employer guarantee, so total super in this scenario is $11,400.
What Is Not Included
HELP/HECS student loan repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, the private health insurance rebate, SAPTO for seniors, family tax offsets, other income, work-related deductions and payroll deductions are all excluded. These can move your final figure in either direction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my payslip differ from this estimate?
This estimate covers income tax, LITO and the Medicare levy only. Your payslip can also include compulsory HELP/HECS (student loan) repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge if you lack private hospital cover, the income-tested private health insurance rebate, SAPTO for eligible seniors, higher family or dependant Medicare thresholds, other salary packaged benefits, and allowances or bonuses. PAYG withholding is also worked out on year-to-date earnings, so a single payslip can differ from a full-year average.
What is the Medicare levy surcharge — is it included?
No, the Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) is not included. It is an extra 1%, 1.25% or 1.5% on top of the standard 2% levy for higher-income earners who do not hold appropriate private hospital cover. Whether you pay it depends on your income for MLS purposes and your family situation, so check the ATO's current thresholds and your own private cover before relying on this estimate.
How does salary sacrifice affect my take-home pay?
A genuine salary sacrifice arrangement sends part of your pre-tax salary into super. It lowers your taxable income, so you pay less income tax and Medicare levy, but the sacrificed amount never reaches your bank account — it lands in your super fund instead. At 0% you sacrifice $0 a year and keep $73,812 in cash. Salary sacrifice does not reduce the 12% employer guarantee, however the combined contributions count towards the $30,000 concessional cap, and amounts above the cap can attract extra tax.
Does my gross salary include superannuation?
No, unless your contract says "package" or "total remuneration including super". Australian salaries are normally quoted as cash salary, and the 12% guarantee is paid on top. If a role advertises $105,000 including super, the cash salary is roughly $93,750 with about $11,250 paid as super. Enter the cash salary in the field above, because this calculator treats employer super as a separate, on-top contribution.
Estimate Only — Not Tax Advice
These figures are estimates for general information only and are not tax, financial or superannuation advice. They use individual resident tax rates for the 2025-26 income year and assume a single taxpayer with no dependants, no HELP/HECS debt, no Medicare levy surcharge, no SAPTO and no private health insurance rebate. Employer super is shown at the 12% guarantee rate and is never deducted from take-home pay. Thresholds, offsets and caps change over time, and your employer's withholding may differ from this estimate. Always verify results against the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and your payslip, and consult a registered tax agent before making decisions.
